Leah Jackson, Women's Basketball
Four Mariner athletes were recognized as the Athletes of the Month for December and January at Wednesday’s Mariner Club luncheon. The Maine Maritime Academy athletics staff selects the honorees that are recognized at the monthly gathering of the Mariner Club, sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Wednesday’s luncheon was the first of 2012. The following student-athletes were recognized:
December
Sam Goda – Women’s Basketball
Goda averaged 12.5 and 9.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 50 percent from the floor in December. Goda recently recorded her 1,000th career point on the same night she established a new career scoring high.
Andy Ball – Men’s Basketball
Ball had a great December averaging 16.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. On December 9, during a 65-55 win over Green Mountain College, Ball scored 35 points, which included a 23-of-26 effort at the foul line. The points and free throws made both represent school records.
January
Leah Jackson – Women’s Basketball
Since Jackson returned to the Mariners lineup, Maine Maritime has become stingy at the defensive end of the floor. Jackson’s defense has led the Mariners in limiting opponents to 49.3 points per game. She averaged 5.4 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. She also has nine steals.
Ben Russell – Men’s Basketball
Ben has played excellent basketball for the entire month, averaging 10.1 points per game. He led the team in assists in January with 29 and played extraordinary defense. Russell has been matched up with the NAC's best guards and has effectively shut them down. He averaged 2.9 rebounds per game with 21 boards on the defensive end and had nine steals.
