CASTINE, Maine -- On Thursday, April 20, Maine Maritime Academy's Department of Athletics partnered with the Penobscot Area Special Olympics to host the Seventh Annual Bocce Tournament.
This year 59 teams consisting of Special Olympic athletes and unified partners came to Castine for the event. Over 70 student-athletes, staff and friends helped officiate and participate in the tournament.
"The competition has grown every year, and has become one of the most anticipated days of the year," said Maine Maritime Academy's Event Coordinator and Assistant Football Coach Adam Sherman, "Jeff Bosse does an incredible job putting the event together, and the athletes from all over the state make it an awesome day. I can't wait to do it again next year."
Maine Maritime Academy competes in NCAA Division III, which launched a Special Olympics initiative during the 2010-2011 academic year, and has since provided the opportunity for student-athletes to engage with Special Olympics, fostering a mutual learning experience between Division III student-athletes and Special Olympics athletes.
