Gleason, Goodwin and Huggins Set for Hall Indcution
CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy and Mariners Athletics are proud to announce the selection of Ernold “Ernie” Goodwin ’61, Fred Gleason ’64, and W. Kent Higgins ’66 for induction into the William J. Mottola Mariner Athletics Hall of Fame.
Goodwin, a graduate of Deering High School in Portland, played guard and linebacker for three years for the Mariners (MMA was a three-year school until the middle 1960’s). He was captain of the 1960 team which won the Small College Conference championship and, up to that time, was the most successful ever with a 7-1 record. He went to play on to play for the Portland SeaHawks in the Atlantic Coast Professional Football League until an automobile accident injury ended his career.
Fred Gleason, a native of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, played center and middle guard for four years for the Mariners. Gleason also starred for the baseball team for four years. Those who played with him and saw him play consider him to be one of the best all-around athletes ever to attend MMA.
Kent Higgins was considered by his coach, Verge Forbes to be MMA’s best basketball player during the 1960’s. Higgins held MMA records for points in a game with 46 points and points in a season until the mid-1980’s. He also played golf for the Mariners.
The 2011 William J. Mottola Mariner Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held during Homecoming festivities on Saturday, September 24 at 10:00AM in Delano Auditorium on the MMA campus. In addition to the Hall of Fame induction ceremony a new multi-purpose room that will house the Hall of Fame will be unveiled and dedicated to the Class of 1986 at 4:30PM. The Class of 1986 Room is located in the lower level of Smith Gym. All are invited to both ceremonies.
