Pilgrims Topple Mariners Men

HENNIKER, N.H.—The New England College men's basketball team snapped a four-game slide by posting a 73-54 win over the visiting Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy on Friday evening in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play. 

With the win, the Pilgrims improve to 6-16 overall and 5-10 in NAC play, while the loss drops the Mariners to 2-18 overall and 1-13 in league play.

The Pilgrims opened the game with a 16-0 run, but the Mariners would answer with their own run in the late minutes of the half, bringing the score within one a 25-24 on a three-point basketball by Andy Ball (Hermon, Maine) with three seconds remaining in the half. 

The lead did not change in the game, and the Pilgrims shot 41.4 percent in the second half on 12-29 shooting to lead by as many as 20 in the second half. 

Leading the way for New England College was Abdirahman Mohamed (Biddeford, Maine), who totaled 20 points and 10 rebounds, nine of which came on the defensive end.  Spencer Marzouk (Greensboro, N.C.) totaled 13 points on 5-6 shooting, including 3-4 shooting from behind the three-point arc.  Jonathan Byrnes (Bethel, Conn.) shot 5-8 from the field and 1-1 from three-point range to total 11 points for the Pilgrims.

The Mariners were led by Ball, who totaled 18 points on 8-16 shooting from the field and 1-1 shooting from the free-throw line. Scott Alexander (Bridgton, Maine) and Tyler Pineo (Corinth, Maine) both wrapped up the evening with 10 points apiece, while Brandon Theriault (East Millinocket, Maine) added nine. 

The Pilgrims return to action tomorrow, hosting Husson University at 3:00 p.m. in NAC play.  The Mariners are also action tomorrow, traveling to Colby-Sawyer College for a 3:00 p.m. NAC matchup.
