BUZZARD BAY, Mass. SUNY-Martime overcame an early 2-0 deficit, before surviving a four-goal Maine Maritime onslaught in the fourth, to earn a 12-11 win in a non conference men's lacrosse game Sunday. The Privateers improved to 1-3 while the Mariners fell to 0-2.
Dan Ahern, Matthew Messina and Tom Kelly each scored twice for SUNY Maritime while six different players picked up a goal.
Betti opened the game with two straight to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead early in the first. Nick Schneider put SUNY-Maritime on the board at 9:23 before Houle found Guimond with 3:30 left. Sullivan and Betti traded scores in the final two minutes of the quarter to make it 4-2 after one.
The Privateers opened the second quarter with four straight goals to lead 6-4. Houle's pass to Betti with 1:58 stopped the bleeding and put MMA within one, 6-5, at halftime.
SUNY-Maritime began the third with three straight scores to lead 9-5 with 1:10 left in the quarter. Hermes scored late in the third, and Betti netted one early in the fourth, to get the Mariners within two, 9-7. The Privateers separated themselves with three straight goals to lead 12-7 with 5:23 left in the game. Maine Maritime answered with two goals each from Houle and Betti in the final five minutes but couldn't even the game in the final 30 seconds.
The Mariners return to action Monday, 4 p.m., at Gordon.
