CASTINE, Maine -- Castleton built a 5-0 first quarter lead and never looked back en route to a 13-3 win over Maine Maritime in a North Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse game Sunday. The Spartans remained unbeaten in the conference and improved to 10-3 overall, 7-0 NAC while Mariners fell to 4-7, 4-2.
Zach Davidson paced Castleton with two goals and six assists and Sam Bailey added four scores and one assist. Nicholas Betti led the Mariners with two goals.
Bailey found Alex Green for the Spartans first score before Davidson hit Will Stuhler, Green and Bailey to put Castleton ahead 4-0 early in the first. Stuhler netted an assisted goal at 8:42 before Betti got the Mariners on the board with an unassisted goal 30 seconds later. Davidson netted a late score in the first to give Castleton a 6-1 lead.
Davidson scored early in the second before finding Bailey on three separate occasions to give the Spartans a 10-1 halftime lead.
Taylor Swarter and Matt Nota scored back-to-back goals for Castleton to start the third before Betti and Alex Hermes netted consecutive shots to make 12-3. Alex Denny netted the only fourth quarter score for Castleton.
Peter Latulippe stopped 10 shots in goal for the Spartans to earn the win while Gavin Cote took the loss for the Mariners.
Maine Maritime returns to the field Wednesday in a North Atlantic Conference game, 7 p.m., at Husson.
