CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse picked up a 9-5 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over Thomas College on Wednesday night at Ritchie Field.
The Mariners scored five times in the first quarter, led by three-straight goals from Chase Whittemore (Skowhegan, Maine), to build a 5-1 lead. The Terriers scored twice in the second quarter to close the gap to 5-3 entering halftime, but the Mariners scored twice in the third quarter to take a 7-3 lead and held on for the 9-5 victory.
Whittemore led the Mariners with four goals, one assist, seven ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Dean Samuelson (Southbury, Conn.) added a hat-trick and dished out an assist, while scooping up seven ground balls and causing a turnover. Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine) added a goal, two assists, four ground balls and a caused turnover and Andrew Waltz (Topsham, Maine) picked up the other goal for the Mariners. George Doe (Kennebunkport, Maine) led the Mariners from the faceoff circle, going 14-of 17, to scoop up a game-high 11 ground balls.
Johnathan Wilcox led the Terriers with two goals, Colby Blondin added one goal and two assists, and Michael Small added the other goal for Thomas. Blondin added eight ground balls and Tyler Bartlett led the team with two caused turnovers.
In net, Daniel Lee (Satellite Beach, Fla.) recorded three saves and three ground balls in the victory, while Connor Lamberton tallied 19 saves and nine ground balls in the loss.
The Mariners improve to 3-8 overall and 3-2 in the NAC, while the Terriers fall to 2-7 on the season and 1-5 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, April 22 at 4:00 pm.
