Backus, Doiron and Samson Grab All-Conference Honors

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime's sophomore defender Evan Backus (Farmington, Maine) and senior midfielder Ike Doiron (Wilton, Maine) have been named to the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Second Team, while senior Tom Samson (Waterville, Maine) has been named to the NAC Men's Soccer Sportsmanship Team. 

Backus appeared in all 17 games for the Mariners and tallied a goal in the Mariners' 5-0 victory over UMaine-Farmington late in the season to help the team clinch a playoff birth. The sophomore defender helped lead the team to three shutouts this season, including two against conference opponents.

Doiron, a team captain, started in all 16 games he appeared in this season for the Mariners. The senior scored six goals and dished out an assist, including the game-winner in the Mariners' season-opening victory against the University of New England and in the final game of the regular season against Green Mountain College. Against conference opponents Doiron scored four goals and tallied an assist. Most recently, in the Mariner's 2-1 upset victory over Thomas College in the NAC Quarterfinals, Doiron scored the equalizer in the 78th minute.

Samson, a team captain, earned the start in all 17 games this season. The midfielder scored two goals and a tallied an assist. The NAC Men's Soccer Sportsmanship Team is reserved for those who have distinguished themselves through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The honorees are individuals who have positively affected the soccer culture and environment and whose behavior clearly demonstrates sportsmanship and integrity that go beyond the playing rules and etiquette.
