Travers Evans enters his fifth season as the head of the Men's
Soccer program. The 2010 season marked the first time the
men’s soccer program had advanced to back to back North
Atlantic Conference tournaments in the program’s history, and
the two year total of 14 wins was the most since the 1997-1998
seasons. Two Mariners were honored by the conference at the
end of the season. Sophomore Abdullah Alkhayyat was selected
as a first team player, while Junior Nate Tipton was selected to
the second team. The 2009 season was one of the best in
recent history for the Mariners with a 8-6-3 record and a berth in
the NAC tournament semi-finals for the first time in the program's
history. Five Mariners were honored by the North Atlantic
Conference at the end of the season. First year player
Abdullah Alkhayyat was honored as a first team player while Nick
El-Hajj, Nate Tipton, Dylan Burr, and Jeff Butland were all named
to the second team. In addition Coach Evans was selected as
the NAC Coach of the Year. Coach Evans took over a program
that had won just one game in 2006. His 2007 team won three
matches, and in 2008, the team continued to improve by winning four
matches despite starting seven first year players. Two of those
first year players, Nick El-Hajj, and Nate Tipton, were selected as
2nd Team All-Conference members.
Prior to coming to MMA, Coach Evans spent 11 years at the
University of Maine. He lead his 2003 men's soccer team to their
first post season appearance since 1993, and the most wins in
almost a decade. For his efforts that season he was named the
America East conference Coach of the Year. Prior to being hired as
the head men's soccer coach, Evans served as the Assistant Director
of Soccer Operations for one season and served as the Assistant
Men's Soccer Coach for three seasons.
Evans has been very active in the youth soccer scene in Maine as
well. He is the co-founder, former president, and current coach in
the Blackbear United Football Club. Blackbear United is a youth
soccer program that services approximately 300 players in the
greater Bangor area. He also served as a coach in the Olympic
Development program in Maine for five seasons, most recently
coaching the 1987 boys. Evans has also served as a guest lecturer
at the Maine AGM in both 1998 and 2006. Coach Evans has also taken
both his National and Advanced National Coaching Diploma Courses
with the NSCAA.
Prior to the beginning of his coaching career Evans played
collegiately at Northeastern University. Evans played for New
Hampshire coaching legend Jim Tufts at Exeter High School for two
seasons, and for two seasons under the tutelage of longtime
Portland High School coach Rocco Frenzilli. He was a member of the
New Hampshire Olympic Development Program, and was named to the
Foster's Daily Democrat dream team in 1989. Evans earned a
Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from the University of Maine
in 1997.
Coach Evans lives in Castine with his wife Johanna and their three
children, son Riley 9 and daughters Taylor 7, and Acadia
