On the last day of racing, the team clinched the title with a second and two firsts. MMA went back in 2009 and successfully defended their title. In 2008 the team won the Intrepid Cup at Navy in Colgates and in 2009 they won the Storm Trysail Intercollegiate Regatta in J44’s.
Along with the big boat program, the sailing team also competes at the Collegiate level in dinghy’s. The team is ranked within NEISA, and competes against Division I teams. It is Tom’s goal to bring the team to a top ten ranking in their division.
Before Tom came to MMA he was living in Northeast Harbor,
Maine. He lost his leg to cancer at the age of ten and turned
to sailing and has been competing ever since. In 1998, he
began an Olympic Soling Campaign and placed 5th at the 2000 Olympic
Trials. He went on to win the 2000 2.4 Metre Paralympic
Trials and won the Bronze in Sydney, Australia. He was
nominated in 2001 for US Sailing Male Athlete of the Year and in
2004 he was nominated for Rolex Yachtsman of the Year. Tom
went on again to win the 2004 2.4 Metre US Paralympic Trials
and won the Silver in Athens, Greece. Tom continues to share
his knowledge and resources with his students in Match Racing and
Fleet Racing.
