Lady Mariners cruise with strong second half

January 22nd, 2010 – (Poultney, VT) – Maine Maritime Academy's Sam Goda (Eliot, ME) dropped 18 points, grabbed seven boards, and notched five assists to lead the Lady Mariners over Green Mountain College 70-52 in North Atlantic Conference women's basketball action Friday evening. The hosts fall to 5-8 on the season (0-3, NAC) while MMA evens their record at 8-6 (3-1, NAC).

MMA charged out of the gates, grabbing an early 10-4 advantage and, by midway through the half, had extended the lead to 14 (24-10). The Eagles responded closing to within five with 3:43 left before the Mariners pushed the lead back to eight, heading into the locker room at 36-28.

The Mariners featured 11 different scorers in the opening 20 minutes and their defensive pressure forced the Eagles into 16 turnovers. GMC's Chelsea Paul (Northville, NY) tallied 16 of her game-high 23 points in the opening half to keep the home side in the game.

A free-throw by Paul with 4:19 gone in the second half trimmed the Mariner lead to three, but it was as close as the Eagles would get. MMA closed the game on a 30-14 run, forcing GMC to settle for tough shots.

Three Mariners scored double digit points with Goda leading the way (18) followed by Maggie Smith (Bath, ME) with 17, while Jessica Stahl (Bowdoin, Me) dropped 10. MMA grabbed 24 offensive rebounds on the night and held a commanding 46-37 advantage on the glass.
