Mariners Hold On; Win Key Largo Consolation Game

TAVERNIER, FLA. -- Four players reached double digits in scoring to help Maine Maritime edge Elmira 60-59 in the consolation game of the Key Largo Classic Saturday. The Mariners evened their record to 4-4 while the Eagles fell to 4-7.

Mary Badeen paced Maine Maritime with 19 points, Leah Jackson and Bekah Campbell each had 14 and Alexis Bennett added 11. Jackson also pulled down 10 boards.

Jessica Zoltowski netted 19 and Maria Thannhauser 13 to lead Elmira.

The Mariners jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, behind five points from Badeen and two each by Bennett and Jackson, with 15:47 left in the opening half. Elmira used a 10-2 run in the next five minutes to lead 12-11 with 10:11 left. After two ties, Maine Maritime took a seven point lead, 24-17, on Campbell's layup with 3:05 remaining. Elmira netted six unanswered to trail by one, 24-23, at halftime.

Maine Maritime increased its lead to 13, 38-25, four minutes into the second half before the Eagles managed to make it a three point game, 42-39, with 9:58 left in the game. The Mariners held a slight advantage for the next eight minutes before a layup by Zoltowski got the Eagles within two, 57-55, with 38 seconds left. Three Bennett free throws in the final 16 seconds helped the Mariners hold on for the win.

Maine Maritime returns to the court Friday in a NAC game against Colby-Sawyer. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
