Mariners Fall to Spartans

CASTLETON, Vt. –  Castleton limited Maine Maritime to nine second half points en route to 66-36 win in a North Atlantic Conference women's basketball game Friday. The Spartans improved to 19-1, 12-1 NAC while the Mariners fell to 9-10, 6-6.

Bekah Campbell paced Maine Maritime with 12 points and added four rebounds and four blocks. Leah Jackson grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds.

Alyssa Leonard led Castleton with 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting, and added seven rebounds and five assists. Jade Desroches chipped in with 11 points while Liz Douglass had six points, six rebounds and two assists off the bench. Stephanie Linder recorded a team-high five steals and scored five points.

The Spartans led by just ten points at the half but turned up the defensive intensity in the second, forcing the Mariners into 3-for-22 shooting in the period. 

The Spartans jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the first 4:16, the final bucket coming on a Desroches three. The Mariners closed within five two minutes later, but Castleton answered with 12-3 run to make itt 27-13 with 9:08 remaining in the first half. 

Castleton maintained a double-digit advantage until an 8-0 run cut the lead to 32-25 with 1:55 left. Kelly Conway responded with a layup, and after a Campbell bucket, Desroches finished off the first-half scoring with a shot from beyond the arc to give the Spartans a 37-27 lead.

In the second half Castleton opened on an 11-3 run, capped off with a layup by Leonard to push the Spartan advantage to 50-30 at 15:23. Hannah Lyons made a free throw with 14:24 left, but Maine Maritime didn't score for the next 12 minutes.

The Mariners return to the court, 3 p.m., at Green Mountain.
