MILTON, Mass. - Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored a season-high 24 points to lead Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball to a 64-44 victory over Curry College in the Curry College Tip-Off Tournament Championship Game on Sunday afternoon.
The Mariners improve to 2-1 overall and will return to action on Tuesday, November 28 when they host UMaine-Farmington at 5:30 pm in the North Atlantic Conference opener for both teams. Curry falls to 2-1 on the season.
The first quarter was a competitive back-and-forth battle between the two teams, but Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) hit a three to send the Mariners into the second quarter with a 16-15 lead.
The first five minutes of the second quarter proved to be exactly like the first, with the teams exchanging the lead numerous times. Maine Maritime went on a 14-6 run to close out the half and took a 32-25 lead into halftime.
The Mariners held the Colonels to just seven points in the third quarter, and cruised to the 64-44 victory.
Felix added eight rebounds, two blocks and an assist to earn All-Tournament honors. Ogden just missed a double-double with a game and career-high 13 rebounds, and nine points, while also adding four assists and three steals. Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) added a team-high five assists, while also contributing five points, and three rebounds to also earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Emily Irwin led Curry with 13 points, six steals, five rebounds, two assists and a block and Gina Coote led the Colonels with seven rebounds.
The Mariners shot 43.6 percent from the floor, while Curry shot 25.4 percent. Maine Maritime also outrebounded the Colonels 53-36.
