Meet Craig Dagan

Dagan is entering his 11th season at the helm of the Women’s Basketball program at Maine Maritime Academy. His tenure has seen the Mariners win two North Atlantic Conference Tournament titles, four NAC Regular Season titles, and have three trips to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

Under Coach Dagan’s the program has produced a record of 180 wins and 92 losses, and have ranked as high as 15^th in the nation (2006-2007). His 2006 squad posted 25 victories, including a victory at #1 Bowdoin, snapping the Polar Bears home-winning streak at 76 games. That came a season after his squad earned a 24-5 record. His NAC counterparts saw fit to name him the Coach of the Year for that effort.

Known for their tough defensive philosophy, Dagan’s Mariners have finished in the top 10 nationally in field goal percentage defense and scoring defense four times. MMA has also been ranked #1 nationally in rebound margin in 2002, 2004, and again in the 2006 season. The 2001-2002 Mariners led Division III in field goal percentage defense.

Many of Dagan’s players have been recognized with individual honors over the past decade. He has coached four NAC Rookies of the Year (Stacy Jones, Julia Knights, Shelley Gott, and Tatum Welch), four NAC Players of the Year (Julia Knights, Alyssa Burns in 2005, 2006, and again in 2007), two NAC Tournament MVP’s (Kate Lawler & Shelley Gott), and 19 different conference all-stars, including 13 All-NAC First Team selections.

Prior to his arrival at MMA, Dagan served as an assistant coach for two years at Springfield College (Springfield, Mass.) and for five years at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His successes as an assistant coach included three NCAA tournaments and over 130 wins.

Dagan is a native of South Berwick, Maine. He received an Associates Degree from Southern Maine Technical College in 1991, where he played basketball, volleyball, and baseball. He then went on to the University of Massachusetts where he played basketball and golf while earning his Bachelors degree in Business. In 2001, Dagan received his Master's Degree in Athletic Administration from Springfield College.

Dagan also served as the Head Women's Soccer Coach at MMA from 2001 to 2006. He was named NAC Soccer Coach of the Year in 2003. His soccer teams had combined for a 43-32-8 record over his last five seasons, including five-straight NAC playoff appearances. Dagan left the soccer position at MMA to become the Sports Information Director, a capacity he served in until 2011 when he moved into a role in the Development Office.
