Lady Mariners 2-1 Winners Over UMF
Castine,
Maine - Senior striker Diana Manatt-Rogers (Conway, MA) scored in
the 76th minute on a penalty kick to give Maine
Maritime the 2-1 victory over The University of Maine at Farmington
Saturday evening in a North Atlantic Conference match-up at Ritchie
Field. The Mariners outshot the Beavers 18 to 11 in an evenly
matched contest, which was both team's conference opener.
The
win for the Lady Mariners was the first over the Beavers since the
2004 season when MMA beat UMF 3-1 in Farmington.
The
Lady Mariners scored first 26 minutes into the match when Katie Hutchinson
(Dixfield, ME) lofted the ball over the Farmington keeper to give
MMA the 1-0 advantage. The Beavers knotted the score at 1-1 just
before the half when Melissa St. Amand (Windsor, ME) gathered a
deflected ball inside the MMA six and tucked it by the keeper for
the goal.
Both
teams had scoring chances throughout the second half, but with just
under 15-minutes to play, a hand ball was called on a UMF defender
and the Lady Mariners had a penalty kick to take the lead. Senior
striker Diana Manatt-Rogers took the PK and blasted it by the
keeper into the top right corner for the 2-1 lead and the eventual
game winner.
Lacey Jackson
(York, PA) recorded the win for MMA while making 7 saves on 11
shots. McKell Barnes (Durham, ME) took the loss for the Beavers
making 5 saves on 18 shots. The win improves MMA's record to 3-3
(1-0 NAC) on the season while UMF drops to 2-3 (0-1 NAC).
