Castleton sinks Lady Mariners 1-0
Castleton,
VT - Courtney Chadburn (North Clarendon, VT) scored what proved to
be the game winner in the 22nd minute and Castleton State College
held on for a 1-0 win over Maine Maritime Academy in North Atlantic
Conference (NAC) women's soccer action Saturday at Spartan
Stadium.
Castleton
has won six-straight games, and has not allowed a goal during the
streak. The scoreless streak has lasted more than 553 minutes, with
the Spartans outscoring their opponents 19-0 over that span.
Chadburn
struck her 10th goal of the season, which was set up on one of
Castleton's nine corner kicks. Meryssa Wacholder (East Greenbush,
NY) served the corner into the box and Kelly Gerken (Scottsville,
NY) laced a header towards the goal. Maine Maritime keeper Lacey Jackson
(York, PA) turned away Gerken's try but Chadburn struck a low line
drive past Jackson for the goal.
Maine
Maritime nearly tied the contest just four minutes later as a
through ball slipped past the Castleton defense to Alexis Bennett
(Freedom, ME). Bennett ripped a shot that was turned away by Cady
Kerin (Barre, VT).
From
then on, it was all Castleton as the Spartans out-shot their guests
23-2. Jackson kept the Mariners in the game turning away 10 shots,
and taking balls out of the scoring area on several occasions.
Kerin
finished with the lone save to earn the shutout.
Castleton
improves to 6-5-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in NAC play. The
Spartans will take on three-time defending NAC champion Husson
University tomorrow at 12 noon. Maine Maritime falls to 6-6-0
overall and 1-2-0 in conference action. The Mariners are likewise
in action tomorrow, traveling to Green Mountain College for a 12
noon kick-off.
