Mariners Top Mules
CASTINE, Maine – Chelsea Ward (Homer, Alaska) turned in 19 kills to lead Maine Maritime to a 3-1 win over Colby at Smith Gymnasium Tuesday evening. The win was the Mariners (21-4) first victory over the Mules (10-13) in the six meetings between the schools. Set scores were 25-17, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22.
Ward offered six kills in both the first and final set. It was her spike on the left side that sealed the Mariners 39th consecutive win in Smith Gymnasium. Ward was also credited with a solo block and a pair of assisted blocks to go with three digs. Jennifer Dixon (Ellicott City, Md.) was on point all night, setting up 31 kills. She also dug the Mariners out 11 times. Melissa Lail (Elizabeth, Colo.) had 12 kills and 10 digs to go with a pair of aces, while Sydney Robertson (Barnstead, N.H.) offered seven kills and four assisted blocks to the cause.
The Mules serving game gave Maine Maritime fits throughout the night. Colby recorded 16 aces with Emily Varni (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) leading the way with five. Kate Pleasants (Virginia Beach, Va.) served up four aces, while Kate Bellerose (West Newton, Mass.) had three. Pleasants also recorded 22 assists and six digs on the evening. Caitlin Burchill (Walpole, Mass.) was the prime beneficiary with nine kills. Maggie Taylor (Cabin John, Md.) had seven.
With the victory, Maine Maritime is within a single victory of matching the program record for wins in a season. The Mariners will attempt to match that record tomorrow night at home against Maine-Machias. Colby returns to action on Saturday for a NESCAC tri-match at Bates.
