GORHAM, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball rallied back from a 2-1 deficit, defeating the University of New England 25-18 in the fourth set and 15-11 in the fifth set to claim the 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 13-25, 25-18, 15-11) victory on Friday night.
The Nor'easters escaped with a narrow 25-22 victory over Maine Maritime in the first set, but the Mariners came back to take the second set 25-18. UNE claimed the victory in the third set 25-13 but Mariners responded with back-to-back set victories, to pick up their first win over the Nor'easters since 2009.
Sophomore Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) led the Mariners with 15 kills, four digs and four blocks. Freshman Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) had an impressive collegiate debut for the Mariners, recording 10 kills, four digs, and two aces, while sophomore Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) registered a double-double of 32 assists and 11 digs, while also chipping in with three kills, two blocks, and an ace.
Sophomore Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led all players with 20 digs and five aces, and also contributed three assists. Junior Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) tallied 10 digs, two aces and a kill.
Paige Simoneau led UNE with 15 kills, two blocks and an ace, while teammate Kristen Falcinelli recorded a double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs and Katie Marsh also added 10 digs.
The Mariners improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Nor'easters fall to 0-1 overall. Maine Maritime will return to action tomorrow against the University of Southern Maine at 10:00 am and Saint Joseph's College of Maine at 12:00 pm.
