Mariners Split Matches in First Day of JWU Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball defeated Bridgewater State University 3-2 and fell to the hosting Johnson & Wales University 3-0, in the first day of the Johnson & Wales University Invitational. 

Maine Maritime 3 – Bridgewater State 2 (25-18, 25-27, 25-10, 23-25, 15-10)

The Mariners picked up a 25-18 victory in the first set, but Bridgewater State (1-5) edged the Mariners 27-25 to tie the match at 1-1. The two teams exchanged set victories, with the Mariners taking the third set 25-10, and the Bears claimed the fourth set by another narrow margin, 25-23. In the deciding set, Maine Maritime picked up the 15-10 victory and the 3-2 match win.

Sophomore Maggie MacMahon (Boise, Idaho) led the Mariners with 13 kills, four digs and an assist, freshman Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) tallied 10 kills, five digs, three aces and an assist and sophomore Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) recorded a team-leading 10 digs, two assists and an ace. Sophomore Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) led all-players with 30 assists, and chipped in with six digs, four aces and two kills.

Kayla Baril led the Bears with 10 kills, Alyssa Kelley led the team with 16 assists, and Cassidy Tyros added a match-high 13 digs.

Johnson & Wales 3 – Maine Maritime 0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-16) 

Johnson & Wales (6-0) picked up a 25-12 victory in the first set, used four-straight points to close out the second set with a 25-9 victory, and five-straight points midway through the final set to take a 25-16 victory.

Jessica D'Auria led the Mariners with 11 kills, five digs and a block, Maria Perez tallied eight digs, two kills and two assists, and Sydney Adams led the Mariners with 22 assists, while also adding seven digs, two kills and a block. 

Hannah Dolan led the Wildcats with 11 kills, teammate Brylee Frank led all players with 31 assists and the team with seven digs.

The Mariners (3-3) return to action tomorrow in the second day of the JWU Invitational with matches against Gordon College at 12:00 pm and Wesleyan (Conn.) at 2:00 pm.
