Volleyball Falls to USM and UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball fell to Southern Maine 3-0 and the University of New England 3-2 on Saturday in non-conference action.

Southern Maine 3 – Maine Maritime 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-17)

The Mariners took an early 10-6 lead in the first set, but the Huskies used a nine-point run to take a 15-10 lead and the 25-19 victory. In the second set the Mariners held a 12-8 lead following seven-straight points but the Huskies fought back to claim the set 25-20. The Huskies claimed the match with a 25-17 victory in the third set.

Maggie MacMahon (Boise, Idaho) led the Mariners with seven kills, and added seven digs, an ace and a block. Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) led the Mariners with 21 assists, and contributed six digs, three aces and a block and Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led the Mariners with 10 digs, an ace and an assist. 

Jess Williamson led the Huskies (15-5) with 10 kills, Lauren Delissio added a team-best nine digs, and Nicole Schmitz contributed a match-high 30 assists. Jamie Jannaone led all players with six aces.

University of New England 3 – Maine Maritime 2 (24-26, 17-25, 25-14, 25-12, 15-11)

The Mariners took the 26-24 victory in a very competitive first set and took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-17 win in the second set. The Nor'easter fought back from the deficit and took the final three sets to pick up the 3-2 win.

Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) led the Mariners with 16 kills, three aces, one dig and one block, Maria Perez led the team with 22 digs, while also adding four aces and an assist and Hannah Butland (Cumberland, Maine) added 16 digs, two aces and two kills. Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) had 15 digs, eight kills, and assist and a block, Melissa Spaulding led the Mariners with 32 assists and Maggie MacMahon chipped in with 10 digs, eight kills, two assists and two aces.

Molly Camelo led the Nor'easters (8-11) with a double-double of 18 kills and 18 digs, Rene Roggenbuck added 11 kills, and Sydney Christiansen had a team-best 21 assists. Katie Marsh tallied 20 digs and three aces.

The Mariners fall to 12-9 on the season and will return to action on Wednesday night when they host UMaine-Presque Isle at 5:30 pm for a non-conference match.
