2010 Maine Maritime Academy Cross Country Season Review
The Mariner cross country teams showed continued success from the previous year with a 2010 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) 2nd place finish for the men and a building season for the women. Optimism reigns as the teams enter the 2011 season under the watch of new Head Coach Ryan King.
One large hurdle for the women was the need to overcome the loss of Rachel Sincebaugh '10 (Greenville, TX/Rockledge High School), who was the NAC Runner of the Year, as she captured the individual crown in 2009. The Lady Mariners participated in 7 events and finished 7th at the NAC Championships.
First year runner Emily Fanning '14 (New Boston, NH/Goffstown High School) paced the team at the NAC Championships 6K course in 23:02 for a 28th place finish.
The future looks bright for the team, especially considering that Samantha DePlanche '13 (Dover, NH/Dover High School) improved considerably over her 2009 performances and should continue to develop as time progresses. Also Blair Fontaine '12 (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire High School), who missed the end of the season due to injury, returns to race this fall and looks to be at full strength for her senior season.
The closure of the 2010 season rounded out the collegiate career of senior Laurel Evanofski (Contookcook, NH/Marrimack Valley High School), who was the first Lady Mariner at the Pop Crowell Invitational (Gordon College, Wenham, MA), State of Maine Championships (Pineland Farms, New Gloucester, ME), and Mariner Invitational (Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, ME).
In the 2010 season, the NAC Runner of the Year and NAC Champion Matt Methot '12 (Portland, ME/Portland High School) led the charge for the Mariners and also paced the men's team in all eight meets. Methot, who would earn First Team NAC Conference honors and was the NAC Men's Runner of the week on 6 different occasions, was complimented with Second Team NAC Conference honors from Seniors Greg Baribault '11 (Amston, CT/RHAM High School) and Lucas Miller '11 (Belfast, ME/Belfast High School).
The Men's squad won at the University of Maine at Presque Isle Invitational (September 18th) and Mariners Invitational (Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, ME) on October 22nd and also finished in 2nd at the University of Maine Farmington Invitational. They also finished an impressive 12th place against 23 teams at the Pop Crowell Invitational (Gordon College, Wenham, MA)
To help show their continued resilience as a team and to match Matt Methot's victory on the 8K course at the NAC Championships in Castine in 26:14, was Miller's 11th place (28:45) finish and Baribault's 15th place finish (29:17). Senior Matt Francis '11 (Belfast, ME/Belfast High School) toured the course in 29:31 to place 17th, and Junior Evan Vachon '12 (Waterville, ME/Waterville High School) finished close behind with a 30:04 effort, which was good for 23rd place. Also, Junior Patrick Lindsey '12 (Winthrop, ME/Winthrop High School) posted a 32:22 time to place 38th.
Sophmore Noel Desausser-Gauthier '13 (Dover, NH/St. Thomas Aquinas High School) participated in four meets in 2010, but was unable to complete the season due to injury. He will help provide quality, experience and depth to the team next fall.
The end of the 2010 campaign capped the collegiate careers for seniors Greg Baribault, Lucas Miller and Matt Francis, who all competed for 4 years on the Mariners squad.
