MMA Names Cross Country Captains
CASTINE, Maine -- Patrick Lindsey (Winthrop, ME/Winthrop High School) and Samantha Deplanche (Dover, NH/Dover High School) will captain the Maine Maritime Academy men's and women's respective cross country teams in 2011. Ryan King, the Mariners' head coach, introduced the captains at the 49th Annual Cross Country Team Awards Banquet this past spring.
"Samantha is quiet and calm but is a strong member of the team who is seen as more than willing to put the work in to do her share," said King. "Pat is a great guy and he works very hard. He is also someone who I can talk with to get a feel for the team."
The selection process incorporates the help of the outgoing senior class along with Assistant Coach and former MMA runner, Cory Googins '11.
"The Cross Country Captain is a leadership role in which you lead by example," noted King. "This doesn't mean that you try to do everything yourself but, rather guide those around you to perform in the same manner the same tasks that you also perform."
The captains' responsibilities will be to generate team spirit, to lead warm up, stretches and cool downs, to be role models for all team members, to help organize summer running plans, to know their teammates, and serve as a team spokesperson.
The Mariners open the 2011 season on Saturday, September 3rd at the Mount Blue Invitational, hosted by Maine-Farmington.
