UCU Mariner Report: Week of October 7

Men's Cross Country

The Mariners finished seventh out of 13 teams at the State of Maine Championships, hosted by Colby College last Saturday. Sophomore John Hassett (Castine, Maine) was the top finisher for the Mariners, finishing 41st out of the 157 runners on the 8K course, with a time of 28:43.6.

The Mariners are off this week, and return to action at the Suffolk Invitational on Saturday, October 19.

Women's Cross Country

The Mariners finished ninth out of 10 teams last Saturday at the State of Maine Championships, hosted by Colby College. Senior Abigail L'Abbé (Topsham, Maine) was the Mariners' top finisher, placing 89th out of 143 runners on the 5K course, with a time of 24:38.9.

The Mariners are off this week, and return to action at the Suffolk Invitational on Saturday, October 19.

Golf

The Mariners hosted the Mariner Invitational last Thursday, finishing fifth out of nine teams and were led by senior Chance Whittemore (Skowhegan, Maine) who shot a 77 on the par-70 course, to finish tied for fourth out of the 45 golfers.

This week the Mariners prepare for the two-day North Atlantic Conference Championship (NAC) beginning on Saturday at the Waterville Country Club. Last year Whittemore carded an 83 on day one and shaved five strokes off that for a 78 on day two to finish in a tie for 10th place overall. The Mariners placed ninth out of the 11 teams competing, with a team score of 708 (356-352).

Football

Nikolas Moquin (Goffstown, N.H.) amassed 298 passing yards to set a new single-game record and teammate Dominic Casale (Freeport, Maine) surpassed 1,000 career receiving yards as Maine Maritime Academy football fell to WPI 51-20 in NEWMAC action at Alumni Stadium last Saturday.

The Mariners travel to MIT this Saturday for a NEWMAC matchup at 12:00 pm. The Engineers hold a 7-0 all-time record over the Mariners in a rivalry that dates back to 2008. The past six meetings have been conference matchups, as both teams joined the NEWMAC from the NEFC. Last season, the Mariners fell to MIT, 35-0 in Castine.

Men's Soccer

Maine Maritime went 1-1 this week, picking up a 2-0 shutout victory over SUNY Canton last Saturday when senior Matt Caron (Scarborough, Maine) tallied the game-winner and then dished out an assist to teammate Ryan Holmes (Newmarket, N.H.) on the insurance goal to avenge last year's NAC Semifinal loss to the Roos. The Mariners fell to No. 15 Middlebury 5-1 on Sunday.

The Mariners wrap up their regular season home schedule this week hosting NVU-Johnson on Saturday at noon and NVU-Lyndon on Sunday at 12:00 pm for Senior Day. The Mariners are 10-7-2 all-time against the Badgers, including wins in the last eight meetings. Last season the Mariners defeated NVU-Johnson 3-0 in Castine. The Mariners are 11-6-1 all-time against the Hornets, including a 1-0 victory last season in Castine.

Women's Soccer

Senior Eryn Doiron (Wilton, Maine) scored on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute and dished out an assist on the insurance goal in the 74th minute to lead Maine Maritime women's soccer to a 2-0 victory over SUNY Canton last Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Ritchie Field.

The Mariners host NVU-Johnson on Saturday at 3:00 pm and NVU-Lyndon on Sunday at 2:30 pm. The Mariners are 10-5-3 all-time against the Badgers, including four-straight wins. Last season, the Mariners defeated the Badgers 7-1 in Castine. The Mariners are 8-3-1 all-time against the Hornets, including five-straight wins. The Mariners defeated the Hornets 6-0 last season in Castine.

Volleyball

The Mariners went 4-0 last week against three non-conference opponents. Maine Maritime defeated UMaine-Machias on Wednesday 3-0, and swept a double-header against UMaine-Fort Kent on Friday night, before securing their first-ever straight-set win over Colby College on Saturday.

This week the Mariners host St. Thomas (Canada) on Saturday at 2:00 pm. This is the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
