ORONO, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy split Saturday's softball double-header with Newbury College. The Mariners (3-1) topped the Nighthawks (2-9) 7-6 in the opener. Newbury repaid the favor with an 8-5 win in the nightcap.
Mariners' catcher Leah Jackson (Dedham, Maine) continued her hot start to the season going 4-for-8 with three runs batted in and three doubles on the afternoon. Centerfielder Andi Flannery (East Machias, Maine) went 3-for-8, plating four. First-year twirler Abby Yeo (Bucksport, Maine) earned the win in her first collegiate start, striking out eight batters. She worked a complete game allowing six runs. Only two were earned.
Anjelina Mayjoffo (Antioch, Calif.) went 4-for-7 for the Nighthawks. She scored three runs, drove in another, and posted a triple on the day. Ariel Ross (Gales Ferry, Conn.) went 3-for-7 with three runs batted in. She also tripled. Rebecca Roach (Charlton, Mass.) worked complete games in both halves, allowing a dozen runs. Only half were earned. She struck out 10 on the day.
Newbury trailed 6-4 heading into the final inning of the opener, but posted two runs on as many hits and an error. A two-out, Maine Maritime rally in the bottom of the frame spoiled the Nighthawks' comeback. Cindy Schultz (Bingham, Maine) tripled before Flannery sent her home for the win.
Newbury jumped all over Maine Maritime in the nightcap, posting six runs over the first two innings. Ross set the tone in the first driving home a pair with a single down the leftfield line. Katie Haney (Winchendon, Mass.) plated Roach before the inning was out. Mayjoffo led off the second with a walk and stole her way over to third before a Joanna Robie (Andover, Mass.) double sent her home. Roach helped her own cause later in the inning, driving in Robie.
Maine Maritime got within two runs, 7-5, with a three-run sixth. Flannery doubled to rightfield to plate a pair, but the Mariners stranded her on second. The Nighthawks tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh when a Mayjoffo single turned Haney's two-out single into the eighth run.
Maine Maritime returns to action next Saturday at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The Nighthawks will face New England College next Sunday.
