Mariners Sweep Owls; Earn NAC No. 4 Seed

CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime swept a pair of non-conference softball games Saturday against UMaine-Presque Isle. The Mariners won the first game 4-1 before winning the second 12-3. The Mariners improved to 14-15 while the Owls fell to 5-20.

Husson took two games from Maine-Farmington giving the Mariners the No. 4 seed in next week's North Atlantic Conference playoffs. Maine Maritime will host Maine-Farmington Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

In game one, 

UMPI struck early with a run in the first when Ashley Laking scored on an error. Abby Yeo knocked in Autumn Jones in the second to even the game at 1-1. 

Leah Jackson singled to left in the fifth to plate Cindy Schultz and a Schultz single and Sabrina Keach double scored Molly Marcotte and Yeo in the sixth to give the Mariners a 4-1 lead.

Yeo improved to 7-8 with nine strikeouts in seven innings. Krista Coffin took the loss.

In game two,

Three straight errors by the Mariners in the first inning led to a trio of Owls' runs as Laking, Kellie Peers and Megan Hanningan crossed the plate.

Maine Maritime evened the game in the bottom of the first when Hayley Rae's single brought home Keach and Schultz and an Erica Taylor double scored Jackson. The Mariners took a 4-3 lead after Autumn Jones' sacrifice hit plated Rae.

The Mariners tacked on five in the second to lead 9-3. Singles from Schultz and Keach scored a pair, Kelsie Hilton's triple plated Rae and Jess Menges touched home when the catcher tried throwing out Schultz on a steal at second.

Schultz made it 10-3 with single to center in the third before a double by Keach and a sacrifice hit by Jackson put the Mariners ahead 12-3.

Yeo earned the win again with a complete-game 3-hitter and struck out seven. Amanda Allen took the loss.
