WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior fullback James Ferrar (Cumberland, Maine) surpassed 2,500 career rushing yards in Saturday's 45-0 Maine Maritime Academy football loss to WPI in NEWMAC play. Ferrar becomes just the 10th player in Maine Maritime Academy football history to reach that milestone.
The Mariners totaled 214 yards of offense, including 115 passing yards.
The Engineers scored twice in the first quarter and once in the second quarter to take 21-0 lead into halftime. WPI added three scores in the third quarter and a touchdown in the fourth to claim the 45-0 victory.
Corey Creeger (Biddeford, Maine) led the Mariner offense with 115 passing yards on six completions and 27 rushing yards. Ferrar led the Mariners with 46 rushing yards on 12 carriers, to surpass 2,500 career-rushing yards. Dominic Casale (Freeport, Maine) led Maine Maritime's receivers with 39 yards on two catches.
Derek Breunig (Westbrook, Maine) led all players with 11 tackles, including nine solo stops, two quarterback hurries and a broken up. John Bennett (Chelsea, Maine) chipped in with 10 tackles (8 solo) and an interception return of 15 yards.
Sean McAllen led WPI's offense with 182 yards on 23 carries and a pair of touchdowns, while quarterback Blake Rice accumulated 98 passing yards on 12 completions and two touchdowns and Alex Domon pulled down three catches for 25 yards and a touchdown to lead the receivers.
Sam Malafronte led the Engineers with nine tackles including five solo stops and Sam Casey contributed eight tackles, including seven solo.
The Mariners fall to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC, while the Engineers improve to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action next Saturday at MIT for a 12:00 pm NEWMAC matchup.
