Thomas Earns NEWMAC Co-Rookie of the Year Honors; Three Mariners Land on All-NEWMAC Team

WESTWOOD, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy's Terrell Thomas (Auburn, Maine) has been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Football Co-Rookie of the Year, while teammate Derek Breunig (Westbrook, Maine) has earned a spot on the NEWMAC First Team and both Dominic Casale (Freeport, Maine) and John Bennett (Chelsea, Maine) have been named to the NEWMAC Second Team.

Thomas, a freshman Marine Engineering Operations major, led the Mariners with 83 tackles this season, including a team-high 47 solo stops, 2.5 tackles for a loss and three broken up passes. The outside linebacker also led the team and the conference with 11.9 tackles per game.

Breunig, a senior Marine Engineering Operations major, has been named to the NEWMAC First Team for the second year in a row at the linebacker position. Breunig, ranked second on the team with 81 tackles this season, while leading the team and ranking second in the conference with 12 tackles for a loss. Breunig also tallied a sack for 10 yards and four broken up passes. 

Casale, a sophomore International Business & Logistics major, led the Mariners with 550 receiving yards, the most by a Maine Maritime wide receiver since 1997, on 41 catches and seven touchdowns. Casale ranked second in the conference in receiving touchdowns and tallied a long pass reception of 71 yards, while averaging 13.4 yards per catch.

Bennett, a senior Marine Engineering Technology major, recorded 57 tackles, including 33 solo stops and three tackles for a loss of six yards. The team captain also tallied two interceptions which he returned for 46 yards, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a broken up pass. Bennett, a defensive back, was also named to the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Team. The Sportsmanship Team is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct, regardless of his overall performance or statistics for the season.
