NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Maine Maritime Academy football fell to Norwich University 51-10 on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Haynes Family Stadium.
With the loss the Mariners fall to 0-8 overall 0-5 in the NEWMAC, while the Cadets improve to 5-2 on the season and 2-2 in the conference. Maine Maritime enters a bye week, before hosting Springfield College on Saturday, November 9 at 12:00 pm.
Norwich scored 16-unanswered points before the Mariners got on the board with a 24-yard field goal from Maxwell Horton (Eliot, Maine) early in the second quarter. The Cadets scored 28-unanswered points to enter halftime with a 44-0 advantage and marched to the 51-10 win.
Junior quarterback Nikolas Moquin (Goffstown, N.H.) amassed 158 yards on 17 completions, while freshman wide receiver Reed Hopkins (Augusta, Maine) pulled down five catches for 79 yards and rushed for the Mariners' lone touchdown of the day.
Joel Bennett (Chelsea, Maine) and Spencer Baron (Mariaville, Maine) tallied nine tackles each to lead the Mariners' defense. Bennett recorded seven solo stops, while Baron had three solo stops, and Terrell Thomas (Auburn, Maine) had eight tackles, including four solo tackles and a sack for a loss of six yards.
Norwich's Matt Dunn threw for 376 yards on 19 completions and four touchdowns, Trevor Chase caught seven passes for 170 yard and a pair of touchdowns, while teammate Manni Romero hauled in eight catches for 120 yards and a score and Steve Cuqua led the Cadet running backs with 82 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns.
Defensively, six Cadets racked up four tackles each, including Avantaye Salomon who had four tackles, including three tackles for a loss of 21 yards with two sacks and a forced fumble.
