Season Preview: Men's Basketball

Looking Ahead to the 2017-18 Season: Under the direction of first year head coach Dan McNeely, the Mariners will open up the 2017-18 season with five home games, beginning with a non-conference matchup with Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Wednesday.

"We are very excited to have the opportunity to play in front of our home fans to kick-off the year," said McNeely.

The Mariners return their top four point scorers from last season, including senior Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine). Last year, Newcomb led the NAC in three-point field goals made per game (3.12), and total three-point field goals made (78). Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) also returns for his senior season after leading the Mariners with 17.5 points per game, 4.5 assists per game and 4.1 rebounds per game. 

Sophomore Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) and senior Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine) return after averaging 10 points each last season.

The Mariners will remain in Castine to host the Maine Maritime Tip-Off Tournament against Wheelock College, Bates College and Trinity College on November 18 and 19.

The Mariners will open up North Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday, November 28 against UMaine-Farmington and wrap up the home stand with a non-conference matchup against NESCAC's Colby College on November 30. 

Maine Maritime will hit the road in December, with stops at conference rivals Husson University on December 2, Castleton University on December 8 and Green Mountain College on December 9.

The Mariners will head to New York over the winter break to face SUNY Maritime and Hunter College on December 29 and 30, and stop in Massachusetts for a battle with Curry College on January 2.

Maine Maritime will return to Smith Gymnasium in January for three NAC showdowns, beginning with Husson University on January 6 and New England College and Colby-Sawyer College on January 12 and 13. The Mariners will continue conference play until the season finale on February 17 at UMaine-Farmington.

Season Opener: The Mariners open up their season against Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Wednesday night at 7:30 pm inside of Smith Gymnasium.

History against Saint Joseph's College of Maine: The Monks hold a 19-0 all-time record over the Mariners in a rivalry that dates back to the 1982-1983 season. When playing in Castine, the Monks have a 9-0 all-time record. This is the second-consecutive season that the Mariners will open up their season against the Monks. 

Last season the Monks took a narrow 73-71 victory in Standish, Maine. 

Conference Play: The Mariners open up NAC play on Tuesday, November 28 at 7:30 pm against UMaine-Farmington and will travel to face Husson University on December 2.

Captains: Head Coach Dan McNeely has named sophomore Nicholas DePatsy and senior Brendan Newcomb as captains for the 2017-18 season.

"We are looking forward to the start of the NAC Conference schedule as it will provide very challenging and competitive games," added McNeely. "We have a roster of experienced players, including our captains, Brendan Newcomb and Nick DePatsy, all of whom we anticipate will lead us through the challenges of a new season."

NAC Preseason Poll: The Mariners were selected to finish 10th in the NAC in a preseason poll conducted by the league's coaches. 

Husson was tabbed the favorite in the 2017-18 NAC Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll. The defending champion Eagles were the unanimous choice after claiming all ten first-place votes for a total of 100 points. 

Colby-Sawyer was selected second with 79 points, while Castleton and Thomas tied for third with 66 points apiece. Lyndon took fifth with 57 points, while UMaine-Farmington placed sixth with 55 points and New England College took seventh with 45 points. Rounding out the poll were Johnson in eighth (39 points), Green Mountain in ninth (27 points), and Maine Maritime in tenth (16 points). 

All ten NAC men's basketball teams will kick off their quest for the 2017-18 conference title this week. The top six teams in the regular-season conference standings will qualify for the NAC tournament, which gets underway Tuesday, February 20, with quarterfinal action between seeds 3-6. The top two seeds will earn a bye in the first round and will take on the two quarterfinal winners in the semifinals on Friday, February 23. The two semifinal victors will battle for the NAC Championship on Saturday, February 24.
