BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball defeated Medgar Evers 83-60 on Friday night in their non-conference season opener. The season opening victory is the first for the Mariners since the 2010-2011 season.
How It Happened: The Cougars jumped out to an early lead, but the Mariners outscored the Cougars 44-37 in the first half to take a seven point lead into halftime.
Medgar Evers closed the gap to 44-43 early in the second half, but the Mariners responded with 10-unanswered points to take the 54-43 lead and claim the victory.
Inside the Numbers: All five of Maine Maritime's starters reached double-digits, led by senior Adam Richardson (Bradley, Maine), who tallied 22 points, on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor, seven rebounds, and six assists.
DeMerrill Levy (Houston, Texas) added 18 points, eight rebounds, and four assists in his collegiate debut. Kimani Anderson (Houston, Texas) also contributed 18 points, nine rebounds, and three assist.
Justin Sutton led the Cougars with 23 points, six rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block and Basheeru Camara added 17 points, seven rebounds, six steals, two blocks and an assist.
Maine Maritime held a 45-32 edge in rebounds.
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 1-0 and will remain in New York to play York College tomorrow, Saturday, November 10 at 1:00 pm. Medgar Evers drops to 0-1 on the season.
