DePatsy Lifts Mariners Over York in Season Opener

CASTINE, Maine – Senior Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) scored a game-high 28 points to lead Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball to a 77-74 season-opening victory over York College on Saturday afternoon inside of Smith Gymnasium.

How it Happened: The two teams battled closely in the opening minutes, until the Mariners used a 7-2 run to jump out to a 23-15 lead at 10:56. The Cardinals fought back to close the gap and built a narrow lead. DePatsy hit a three with 2:44 to go in the first half to tie the game at 29-29, sparking an eight-point run for the Mariners who took a 34-29 lead into halftime.

The Mariners came out strong in the second half, and took their biggest lead of the day (55-46) following a three from DeMerrill Levy (Houston, Texas) at 11:28. The Cardinals responded with a 14-unanswered points to take a 60-55 advantage at 7:17 but the Mariners chipped away at the lead and a bucket from Levy tied things up at 63-63 with 5:49 to go. Maine Maritime outscored the Cardinals 8-2 in the final two minutes of play to secure the victory.

Inside the Numbers: DePatsy scored 28 points, to go with four rebounds and a steal, while Levy added 18 points, five rebounds, five assists, and a steal and Riley Jorgenson (Vienna, Va.) contributed 16 points, five rebounds, and a steal. Riley MacLeod (Bucksport, Maine) added a game-high nine assists to go along with a team-high seven rebounds and chipped in with three points and a steal.

Devine Chisholm led the Cardinals with 23 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals, while Donald Hartley, Jr. chipped in with 15 points, four assists, three rebounds, three steals and a block and Akil Vaugh rounded out the players in double-figures with 11 points, seven rebounds and a block.

The Mariners shot 47.5 percent from the floor and 43.3 percent from three-point land, while the Cardinals shot 50 percent from the floor and 36.8 percent from beyond the arc. York held a 37-31 edge in rebounds.

Up Next: The Mariners open their season with a win for the second-straight season, improving to 1-0, while the Cardinals drop to 1-2 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, November 20 when they travel to UMaine-Machias for a non-conference matchup at 7:00 pm.
