Men's Basketball Falls Short Against NVU-Lyndon

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Northern Vermont University-Lyndon 94-87, on Sunday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Smith Gymnasium.

How it Happened: DeMerrill Levy (Houston, Texas) hit a three to spark a 12-2 run by the Mariners, making it 23-16 with 12:28 to go in the first half, but the Hornets fought back to take a 47-46 lead into halftime.

The two teams battled closely to start the second half, but the Hornets took a five-point lead with 39 seconds left and went a perfect 4-of-4 from the line in the closing seconds to hang on for the win.

Inside the Numbers: Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) led the Mariners with a game-high 25 points and also added four rebounds, an assist and a steal, while Andrew Liebert (Plano, Texas) contributed 19 points, five rebounds and two steals and Leyv tallied 18 points, a game-high nine rebounds, an assist and a steal. Riley MacLeod (Bucksport, Maine) dished out a game-high eight assists to go with eight points, seven rebounds, a steal and a block.

Zach Falkenburg and Peyton Olsen led the Hornets with 20 points each, while Falkenburg added three rebounds and an assist and Olsen chipped in with three assists and three steals. Damon Denteh recorded 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists while both Timothy Hoar and Luke Fredsell added 14 points.

The Mariners shot 44.1 percent from the floor and 31.3 percent from three-point land, while the Hornets shot 46.8 percent overall and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. NVU-Lyndon held a narrow 39-36 edge in rebounds.

Up Next: With the loss the Mariners fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference, while the Hornets improve to 4-5 on the season and 1-1 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action next Saturday, December 14 when they travel to Becker College for a 1:00 pm non-conference matchup.
