Mersch Leads Mariners to Fourth at John Queenan Memorial Tournament

CASCO, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy golf finished fourth with a 325 card at the season opening John Queenan Memorial Tournament hosted by Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Tuesday at the Point Sebago Golf Resort.

Freshman Connor Mersch (Holderness, N.H.) had an impressive first outing for the Mariners, leading the way with a 75 to finish second overall out of 40 golfers on the par 72 course. Sophomore Chance Whittemore (Skowhegan, Maine) finished fifth overall with a 78, followed by junior Joey Moir (Bangor, Maine) who carded an 85 to place 20th.

Senior Chase Whittemore (Skowhegan, Maine) finished 25th with an 87 and sophomore Brayden Finn (Highland Park, Ill.) rounded out the Mariner-five with a 94 to place 33rd.

UMaine-Farmington topped the eight-field team with a 306 card, and featured three golfers in the top four. The Beavers were led by Eric Aguiar who captured medalist honors with an even-par 72.  

Tourney-host Saint Joseph's College finished second with a 319 card, University of Southern Maine was third with a 324, and University of New England shot a collective 343 to finish fifth. Thomas College (345), Husson University's 'B' team (350), and Emmanuel College (369) rounded out the group of competing institutions.

The yearly tournament is named in memory of John Queenan, a 2003 graduate of Bow High School who died tragically in an automobile accident just prior to the beginning of his freshman year as a student-athlete at Saint Joseph's.
