Season Preview: Men’s Golf

Looking Ahead to the 2017 Season: The Mariners will kick off their 2017-18 season on September 5 the John Queenan Memorial Golf Tournament hosted by Saint Joseph's College of Maine, before battling UMaine-Presque Isle in a dual match at the Presque Isle Country Club on September 9.

The 2017-2018 golf team is excited about the season," said Maine Maritime Academy Head Golf Coach Noah Tapley, "With a few new freshman and the same team as last year, the vision is for a progressive season ending with a top three finish at the North Atlantic Conference Championship."

The Mariners will compete at the Maine State Golf Association Collegiate Championships on September 16 and 17 and the two-day Husson Invitational on September 23 and 24. 

On October 5 the Mariners will host the Mariner Invitational at the Augusta Country Club and travel to the Colby College Invite on October 8, before competing at the North Atlantic Conference Championships at the Berkshire Hills Country Club on October 15 and 16. 

The Mariners will compete at the NEIGA Championships at the end of October and are scheduled to compete in three spring tournaments beginning with the McDaniel Invitational on March 24 and 25.

Captains: This season the Mariners will be led by captains junior Joey Moir (Bangor, Maine) and senior Chase Whittemore (Skowhegan, Maine).

NAC Preseason Poll: The Mariners were selected to finish sixth in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) preseason golf poll conducted by the league's coaches.

Husson University was been selected as the top men's golf team in the 2017 NAC preseason coaches' poll. The Eagles received a total of 80 points along with eight of the nine first place votes to lead the league.

Salem State University claimed second with 62 points, while Castleton University took third earning the remaining first-place vote for 57 total points and the University of Maine at Farmington earned fourth just one point behind the Spartans with 56 points. Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts took fifth with 39 points and Johnson State College landed in seventh with 36 points.

Rounding out the poll were Green Mountain College in eighth (19 points) and the University of Maine at Presque Isle in ninth (18 points).

Looking Back at 2016: Last season the Mariners finished fifth at the North Atlantic Conference Championship. Erich Klopfer (Palm Harbor, Fla.) led the Mariners with an 11th place finish after the two-day tournament. Joey Moir placed 20th and Chance Whittemore finished 24th.
