Husson Captures Mariner Invitational
MANCHESTER, Maine – Battling windy conditions on the par 70 track at the Augusta Country Club, Husson's Nick Mazurek shot a 74 to top the 40-golfer field at the Mariner Invitational on Thursday. Mazurek led the Eagles to a team score of 306, good enough for the team championship, knocking off the two-time defending champions, Southern Maine, which shot 311.
Mazurek strung together consecutive birdies on holes six and seven, and penciled in par on 11 holes en route to his medalist honors. Four players tied for second at 75, including Husson's Hunter Flynn and Riley Swanson. Southern Maine placed three golfers in the top 10. Shaun McKinnon tied Flynn and Swanson for second at 75, while Greg Kalagias took sixth with a 77. Tristan Dundas finished ninth with a 79.
Joey Moir paced the Mariners to a fourth-place finish tying for seventh place in the field. Moir picked up a birdie on six and shot par on nine holes over the course of the afternoon. Connor Mersch shot 81 to take 16th place. Tyler McKenney and Chance Whittemore each shot 82 to tie for 17th, rounding out Maine Maritime's team score at 323. Zachary Foss finished 35th with a 92.
Mersch parred eight holes and birdied 13. McKenney carded the best round of his freshman campaign with birdies on five and six. He shot par on four holes on the back nine. Whittemore shot par on nine holes over the afternoon, while Foss recovered on the back nine, shaving 12 shots from his front nine and scoring par on six holes.
The Mariners 323 was the second best team score posted this fall. Maine Maritime is idle until next weekend's North Atlantic Conference Championship.
