WATERVILLE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell on the road to Colby College on Wednesday afternoon, 25-4.
The Mules jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Mike Fuller (Portland, Maine) found the back of the net for the Mariners, on a pass from Peter Moore (Scarborough, Maine). Colby answered with four-straight scores but the Mariners wrapped up the first quarter with a goal from A.J. Larrabee (Farmington, Maine) to make it 9-2. Colby took over in the second quarter, scoring 10 unanswered goals to enter the half, leading 19-2.
In the third quarter, the Mariners held the Mules to just two goals, and Fuller scored his second goal of the game, on another assist from Moore. Bronson Guimond (Portland, Maine) picked up the other goal for the Mariners, on an unassisted strike late in the fourth quarter.
Guimond, Michael Dedian (Scarborough, Maine), Ian Larcom (Middletown, R.I.) and Justin Kretzmer (Glastonbury, Conn.) each scooped up a pair of ground balls for the Mariners, while James Wilgus (Phippsburg, Maine) recorded 22 saves in net.
Kevin Seiler led Colby with six goals and two assists and Derek Youngman grabbed three goals and six assists. Austin Moore led the Mules with a game-best six ground balls, while Russell Ollis recorded three caused turnovers.
Tyler Will earned the victory in net for the Mules, after stopping four shots, sharing time in goal with Justin Waligory (three saves) and Harrison Zhu.
With the loss, Maine Maritime falls to 0-2 overall, and Colby College improves to 2-1 overall.
The Mariners return to action this Friday when they travel to Throgg's Neck, New York for the Second Annual Maritime Cup. Maine Maritime will play SUNY Maritime on Friday at 8:00 p.m. and Massachusetts Maritime on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
