WENHAM, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to Gordon College 28-4 in the season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Brigham Complex.
The Mariners fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Fighting Scots improve to 1-0. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, March 3 when they host the University of Southern Maine for a non-conference matchup on Ritchie Field at 4:00 pm.
After an early Gordon goal, the Mariners tied things up following an unassisted goal from Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine) but the Fighting Scots scored 15-unaswered goals to take a 16-1 lead late in the second quarter.
William Evon (Barrington, Ill.) tallied his first career goal to cut the deficit to 16-2, but Gordon took an 18-2 lead into halftime.
Orion Sargent (Topsham, Maine) added a pair of goals in the second half, the first of his career, but the Mariners fell 28-4.
Evon and Mitchell Farley (Biddeford, Maine) led the Mariners with five ground balls, while Farley went 14-of-31 from the faceoff circle. Nathan Granholm (Brunswick, Maine) tallied a pair of caused turnovers and Isaiah Weston (Mt. Vernon, Maine) tallied seven saves in net, in the loss.
Gordon's Austin Early scored six goals, and dished out four assists, while teammate Nico Manganiello added five goals and two assists. Billy Biegun led all players with 11 ground balls, going 19-of-32 from the faceoff circle. Jay Gallipo earned the victory in net for Gordon, stopping five shots.
