WATERVILLE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse defeated Thomas College 5-3 on Monday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Smith Field.
With the win the Mariners improve to 4-7 overall and 4-3 in the NAC, while the Terriers drop to 2-8 on the season and 2-5 against conference opponents. The Mariners clinched the fourth seed in the upcoming NAC Tournament and will host fifth seeded Lyndon State College on Saturday, April 28.
Orion Sargent (Topsham, Maine) sparked a four-goal first quarter for the Mariners and added a goal in the second quarter to make it 5-0 at halftime.
The Terriers fought back, scoring three goals in the final 5:17 of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 5-3 but Maine Maritime's defense came up big to stop the Terriers' momentum and the Mariners came away with the 5-3 victory.
Sargent and Michael Martel (Biddeford, Maine) led the Mariners with two goals each, while Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine) added a goal and two assists to go with two ground balls. Justin Kretzmer (Glastonbury, Conn.) led the Mariners defensively with six caused turnovers and six ground balls, both William Evon (Barrington, Ill.) and Nathan Granholm (Brunswick, Maine) added four caused turnovers, and Mitchell Farley (Biddeford, Maine) went 11-of-12 from the faceoff, scooping up six ground balls.
Jacob Kendall led the Terriers with two goals, Colby Blondin added a goal and two groun balls and Duncan McDougal caused four turnovers and two ground balls.
In net, Isaiah Weston (Mt. Vernon, Maine) was impressive stopping 11 shots to earn the victory, while Connor Lamberton also stopped 11 shots in the loss for Thomas.
New England College earned the top seed in the 2018 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. The Pilgrims (13-4 overall) claimed the top seed in the conference tournament after posting a perfect 7-0 record in NAC play. Top-seeded NEC and second-seeded Castleton (9-7 overall, 6-1 NAC) will receive byes in the tournament's quarterfinal round.
Husson (5-7 overall, 5-2 NAC) claimed the No. 3 seed, while Maine Maritime, Lyndon (6-8, 3-4), and Thomas (2-8, 2-5) earned the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 seeds respectively to complete the six-team tournament field.
Quarterfinal games are scheduled for Saturday, April 28, as the third-seeded Eagles will host the sixth-seeded Terriers, while the fifth-seeded Hornets will travel to the fourth-seeded Mariners. Both quarterfinal game times will be announced tomorrow.
Winners of the two quarterfinal games will advance to the semifinal round on Wednesday, May 2. The top-seeded Pilgrims will host the winner of the Maine Maritime vs. Lyndon quarterfinal, while the second-seeded Spartans will host the winner of the Husson vs. Thomas quarterfinal. Both game times are to be determined.
Tournament action culminates with the NAC championship game on Saturday, May 5, at the highest remaining seed at a time to be determined.
The NAC tournament champion will earn an automatic bid into the upcoming 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.
