Kangaroos Defeat Mariners in Home Opener

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to SUNY Canton, 15-7 on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Ritchie Field.

How it Happened: Hunter Olsen put the Kangaroos on the board first at 14:05, but Zeke Tocci (Naples, Maine) and Jayden Wilson (Lewiston, Maine) scored back-to-back goals to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead at 10:33. Wilson added another goal, but the Roos took a slim 4-3 lead into the second quarter.

Bailey Stockford (Mt. Vernon, Maine) cut the visitor's lead to 5-4 with under a minute to go in the half, but Jacob Facey added goal in the final second to send the Roos into halftime with a 6-4 lead.

Canton added three-unanswered goals in the third quarter and outscored the Mariners 6-3 in the fourth, to claim the 15-7 victory. 

Inside the Numbers: Tocci led the Mariners with three goals, one assist and seven ground balls, Wilson finished the afternoon with two goals, three assists and five ground balls and Max Barton (Yarmouth, Maine) added a goal, an assist and a ground ball. Stockford rounded out the scoring with one goal, and two ground balls.

Defensively, William Evon (Barrington, Ill.) led the Mariners with 10 ground balls, and Tanner Brown (Conway, N.H.) added a team-high four caused turnovers.

In net, Matthew Emery (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) collected 16 saves and six ground balls for the Mariners.

Facey and Noah Robinson led the Roos with four goals each, while Robinson chipped in with two assists and Facey added an assist and a team-high nine ground balls.. 

Defensively, Brandon Schmidt led the team with three caused turnovers. 

In net, Justin LaDuke earned the victory for the Roos with nine saves in just over 47 minutes of action.

The Roos edged the Mariners in ground balls, 58-56.

Up Next: The Mariners fall to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the NAC, while the Kangaroos improve to 3-4 on the season and 0-2 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, March 3 when they travel to Dean College for a non-conference matchup at 3:00 pm.
