CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer scored two-late game goals to pick up a season opening 2-0 victory over the University of New England on Friday night at Ritchie Field.
The first half was a physical back-and-forth battle between the two teams, mirroring last season's 0-0 tie, with the University of New England holding a narrow 7-3 advantage in shots.
The Mariners came out strong in the second half, and registered a number of quality scoring opportunities. In the 67th minute, senior Ike Doiron (Wilton, Maine) broke the stalemate with a goal off of a corner kick from freshman Colby Clarke (Ellsworth, Maine). Minutes later senior Tom Samson (Waterville, Maine) snuck a rebounded shot past UNE's goalie to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead and the eventual victory.
Maine Maritime's Joshua Reeks (Bedford, N.H.) was sharp in net, stopping all five shots he faced, while Nathan Delesdernier tallied eight stops in the loss for the Nor'easters.
The Mariners improve to 1-0 overall, while UNE falls to 0-1. Maine Maritime takes on Colby College on Tuesday, September 5 at 7:30 pm on Seaverns Field at Harold Alfond Stadium.
