CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer fought to a 1-1 tie with Thomas College on Tuesday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Ritchie Field.
The first 30 minutes of the game proved to be an extremely physical back-and-forth contest, until Maine Maritime Academy (1-3-1, 0-1-1 NAC) tallied the first goal of the game in the 31st minute. Colby Clarke (Ellsworth, Maine) drew his defender out and passed a ball in front of the net to Liam Welch (Temple, Maine) who beat the charging goalie for his second goal of the season.
The Mariners had another great scoring chance later in the quarter, when Ike Doiron's (Wilton, Maine) initial shot smacked the crossbar and Evan Backus (Farmington, Maine) kicked a ball into net, but Backus was called offsides, keeping it 1-0.
Thomas College (3-3-1, 1-0-1 NAC) entered halftime with a narrow 7-6 edge in shots, but the Mariners held the 1-0 lead.
In the 57th minute, MacQuille Walker tied the game at 1-1, when his teammate's shot bounced off a defender and he snuck the ball past Maine Maritime keeper Joshua Reeks (Bedford, N.H.).
The two teams continued to battle, but ended regulation deadlocked at 1-1. The Terriers outshot the Mariners 7-2 in the two overtime periods, but Reeks was sharp in net to preserve the draw.
Reeks ended the evening with nine stops, while the Terriers' goalie Jonathan Dutka recorded three saves.
The Mariners return to action this Saturday at New England College for a conference matchup at 1:30 pm.
