LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College scored twice late in the game to edge Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer 2-0, in non-conference action at Garcelon Field.
The Bobcats outshot the Mariners 12-4 in the first half, but Maine Maritime's defense and goalie Andrew Coleman (Saco, Maine) held Bates scoreless.
In the second half, Coleman came up big on a penalty kick in the 64th minute but the Bobcats scored just four minutes later as Eric Opoku put away a loose ball following a shot by teammate Nate Merchant.
Opuko added to the Bobcats' lead in the 71st minute when he took the ball down the field past two defenders, scoring his second goal of the season.
Minutes later Jack Davis (Belfast, Maine) prevented another Bobcat goal, using his chest to deflect a shot from Merchant.
Coleman finished the game with eight stops in the loss, while Robbie Montanaro earned the victory in net for the Bobcats.
The Mariners fall to 2-6-2 overall while the Bobcats improve to 4-1-2 on the season. Maine Maritime returns to action on Monday, October 9 at the University of Maine-Fort Kent for a 2:00 pm non-conference matchup.
