BIDDEFORD, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer fell to the University of New England 1-0, on Friday night in the season opener for both teams at Barbara Hazard Field.
With the loss the Mariners fall to 0-1 and the Nor'Easters improve to 1-0. Maine Maritime will host Southern Maine on Wednesday, September 5 at 6:00 pm on Ritchie Field.
Colby Obrecht scored the game-winner for the Nor'Easters in the 60th minute on an unassisted strike that snuck under the crossbar following a save off of a long throw-in.
Each team had chances early on as shots on goal were tied a 3-3 at halftime. UNE had two early shots in the first three minutes of play. The Mariners had their best scoring chance in the 26th minute as the ball was rolling towards an open net until a Nor'easter defender made a close save to keep the game scoreless.
Dalton Moore (Hollis Center, Maine) led the Mariners with two shots on goal.
UNE edged the Mariners in shots, 15-11, but Maine Maritime took 11 corner kicks compared to the Nor'Easter's eight.
Joshua Reeks (Bedford, N.H.) tallied eight saves in the loss for the Mariners, while Will Shearon earned the victory in collecting three saves in over 64 minutes of action in the net for UNE.
