FARMINGTON, Maine – Matthew Caron (Scarborough, Maine) scored the equalizer and the game-winning goal to lead Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer to a 2-1 victory over UMaine-Farmington on Saturday afternoon in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener for both teams at Leib Field.
The Mariners improve to 1-3-1 overall with the victory and 1-0-0 in the conference, while the Beavers fall to 3-3-0 on the season and 0-1-0 in the NAC. Maine Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, September 19 when they host UMaine-Machias for a 5:00 pm non-conference matchup.
Yusuf Mohamed put the Beavers on the board quickly in the first half, sneaking the ball into net on an assist from Biwe Aden in just the fifth minute to put the hosts up 1-0.
Caron responded for the Mariners on a penalty kick, in the 38th minute, when he grabbed his first goal of the season, and the two teams entered halftime deadlocked at 1-1.
Early in the second half, Caron had another penalty kick turned away by UMF's goalie, but capitalized in the 64th minute on a pass from teammate Dalton Moore (Hollis Center, Maine). Caron's goal proved to be the game winner as the Mariners hung on for the 2-1 victory.
The Mariners held a slim 14-12 edge in shots and both team took one corner kick.
Joshua Reeks (Bedford, N.H.) stopped three shots in the victory for the Mariners, while Matthew Wilson turned away five shots in the loss for the Beavers.
