BANGOR, Maine – Matthew Caron (Scarborough, Maine) scored in the 22nd minute and Colby Clarke (Ellsworth, Maine) added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute to lead Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer over Husson University, 2-0, on Tuesday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Boucher Field.
With the victory Maine Maritime improves to 3-4-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the NAC, while Husson drops to 3-6-1 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play. The Mariners return to action on Saturday, September 29 when they host NVU-Lyndon at 6:30 pm on Homecoming.
Caron net his fourth goal of the season in the 22nd minute on a pass from Dalton Moore (Hollis Center, Maine), to give the Mariners the 1-0 lead. The visitors held a narrow 9-7 edge in shots in the first half.
Early in the second half Caron nearly had his second goal of the game, when his shot beat Husson's charging goalie, Kyle Townsend, but a Husson defender sprinted to deflect the ball inches from the goal to keep it at 1-0.
Caron connected with Clarke in the 82nd minute for the insurance goal, and the Mariners hung on for their first shutout of the season.
Maine Maritime's Joshua Reeks (Bedford, N.H.) earned the shutout victory in net, turning away all three shots he faced, while Townsend stopped three shots in the loss for Husson. Benjamin Powell played in the first 17 minutes of the game for the Eagles, collecting two saves.
The Mariners outshot the Eagles 17-11 and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
