CASTINE, Maine – Junior Matthew Caron (Scarborough, Maine) tallied a hat trick to lead Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer to a 4-1 victory over Unity College on Tuesday evening in non-conference action at Ritchie Field.
With the victory the Mariners improve to 5-6-1 overall, while the Rams fall to 4-8 on the season. Maine Maritime returns to action this Saturday, October 13, when they host UMaine-Presque Isle at 3:30 pm for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup.
Caron picked up his first goal of the game in the 23rd minute on a penalty kick and scored again late in the first half to send the Mariners into halftime with a 2-0 lead. Caron secured the hat trick in the 59th minute with his seventh goal of the season.
Nevin Sweeney scored the lone goal for the Rams, breaking up the shutout at 58:47.
Colby Clarke (Ellsworth, Maine) added his third goal of the season in the 88th minute to wrap up the scoring for the Mariners.
Maine Maritime's Andrew Coleman (Saco, Maine) earned the victory in net, while Sam Napper made 11 saves in the losing effort for Unity.
The Mariners held an impressive 21-3 edge in shots and 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
