CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer defeated UMaine-Presque Isle 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Ritchie Field.
The Mariners improve to 6-6-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the NAC, while UMPI drops to 4-9-1 on the season and 0-5 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, October 20 when they host NVU-Johnson for Senior day at 6:30 pm.
Trevor Richards (Greenville, Maine) scored his first goal of the season late in the first half to break-up over 43 minutes of scoreless play, on an assist from Gerald Aquino (Montville, Conn.). The Mariners added an insurance goal in the 52nd minute when Evan Backus (Farmington, Maine) found the back of the net for his third goal of the season on a pass from Matthew Caron (Scarborough, Maine).
Joshua Reeks (Bedford, N.H.) earned the victory in net for the Mariners, collecting one save, and Caleb Thompson stopped eight shots in the loss for the Owls.
The Mariners outshot the Owls 17-1 and took two corner kicks while Presque Isle took one.
