CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer defeated NVU-Johnson 3-0, on Saturday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Ritchie Field.
The Mariners improve to 7-6-1 on the season and 5-1 in the conference, while the Badgers fall to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the NAC. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, October 23 when they host Thomas College at 6:30 pm for the regular season finale for both teams.
Prior to the game the Mariners honored their senior players: Gerald Aquino (Montville, Conn.), Eli Olson (Charleston, Maine), Joshua Reeks (Bedford, N.H.), Trevor Richards (Greenville, Maine) and Mason Whitaker (Westport Island, Maine).
Dalton Moore (Hollis Center, Maine) broke up the scoreless battle between the two teams in the 44th minute, when Evan Backus (Farmington, Maine) played a ball ahead and Moore snuck it by Johnson's keeper Gerrit Lane.
Colby Clarke (Ellsworth, Maine) took his rebounded shot and bicycle kicked his second attempt in goal to give the Mariners a 2-0 edge in the 48th minute.
Liam Welch (Temple, Maine) added to the scoring in the 77th minute when Moore played a ball behind to Welch and to make it 3-0.
Reeks was impressive in net, making seven saves to earn the victory for the Mariners, while Lane collected four saves in the loss for Johnson.
The Mariners held a 24-9 advantage in shots and a 12-6 edge in corner kicks.
