CASTINE, Maine -- The fifth-seeded SUNY Canton Kangaroos upset the top-seeded Maine Maritime Mariners 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Semifinal action at Ritchie Field.
The two teams battled evenly in the first half, and remained in a scoreless deadlock for the first 74 minutes of play.
Canton's Kyle Smith tallied the first goal of the game in the 75th minute and teammate Brett Anderson added the Kangaroos' second goal of the game in the 88th minute.
Matthew Caron (Scarborough, Maine) played a ball ahead to teammate Colby Clarke (Ellsworth, Maine) who placed the ball over Canton's keeper into net with 48 seconds remaining, but the Mariners comeback fell short and the Kangaroos held on the for the upset.
The Mariners held a 14-12 edge in shots, while the Kangaroos took two corner kicks while Maine Maritime took none.
